If you have ever had a piece of equipment fail on you during a gig
then you know the horrible feeling that overcomes you when there is
nothing you can do about it. That's where a couple important backup
pieces of equipment will make the difference between saving a gig or
ruining somebody's special night.
For example, you
are at a wedding and all of a sudden your full dance floor stops and
stares directly at you as a result of the music halting. You
scramble in an instant sweat wondering what in the world just
happened. There isn't even a microphone to announce that you
may have just blew a fuse in the amp. It ends up that you blew
an amp and there is not another for backup. This situation forces
you to either call it a night or to have somebody drive out a backup
to plug in, either way it could've been resolved quickly if you were
to just keep a backup with you.
If you don't have a
lot of extra room to haul a ton of extra equipment around with you
then here is the minimum to keep on hand.
1) Extra cd player
unit. If you use the Denon style cd rack and it completely goes out
on you then having a single deck cd player will at least allow you
to play some music. For some systems it's a backup of a single deck
unit like what is in the system already.
2) Smaller watt
amp. You could store this under your seat more than likely and use
it if an emergency arises. It doesn't need to be the same size as
the monster that you normally use.
3) Microphone.
Don't be caught yelling to the crown over the speakers, it sounds
cheesy...have that extra mic on hand.
