I've always thought the concept of being a disc jockey is to give a
certain appeal to yourself that stands you out from the crowd...like
as an entertainer! If you went to Vegas and saw a lounge show
you would know EXACTLY who the entertainer was, by the way they
dress and stand out from the crowd. Imagine you are getting
married and you can't remember who the dj is, would that bother
you? More than likely it's because that dj is dressed just the
same as your guests are. Stand out above the crowd with the
way you dress, it may be the deciding difference between getting a
tip and getting stiffed!
Since you catch my
drift, I'll give you a couple hints on dress:
1) Know what the
guests are generally wearing and at least wear a step or two above
them, just so you stand out. Don't wear a tuxedo if they are all
wearing jeans, wear a half tux possibly.
2) Bring a couple
outfits with you on every gig. An example is that your bowtie and accessories
are blue, it happens to be that the wedding party is wearing blue as
well...not cool to match the wedding party, you're not standing out.
An extra set would allow you to change after finding this out.
3) Don't be afraid
to wear memorable items of clothing. Some people will walk away at
the end of the night only remembering your bugs bunny vest or
oversized hot pink bowtie. If you make that look your trademark
you'll be easy to request when people ask who the dj was that wore
that outfit. They may say they don't remember the dj's name but they
know he was wearing a sparkled tux coat when they mention you to
others looking for a dj.
